“Golden Minutes”

STATE-OF-THE-ART PAEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU) ESTABLISHED AT SVIMS WITH ₹52 LAKH FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM SBI
Major step towards strengthening 24×7 emergency and critical-care services for children
“Every minute is precious when a child is critically ill. Our mission is to provide timely, high-quality critical care and save young lives.”
– Dr. Gudaru Jagadish, Director & Vice-Chancellor, SVIMS
“SBI’s ₹52 lakh contribution is not merely financial assistance; it is a humanitarian investment that has the potential to save the lives of many children.”
– Dr. Gudaru Jagadish
Tirupati, September 1:
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati, has taken another significant step towards strengthening specialised emergency and critical-care services for children with the establishment of a dedicated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at SVIMS–Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women.
The state-of-the-art PICU has been established with financial assistance of ₹52 lakh from the State Bank of India (SBI), enabling the institution to create essential critical-care infrastructure for the treatment of seriously and critically ill children.
The new facility is designed to provide advanced medical care with continuous monitoring for children presenting with severe illness, life-threatening infections, respiratory failure, sepsis and septic shock, neurological emergencies, poisoning, cardiac emergencies, postoperative complications and other critical conditions requiring intensive care.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gudaru Jagadish, Director & Vice-Chancellor, SVIMS, said:
“Saving the life of a child is, in many ways, saving the future of an entire family. Every minute is precious when a child is critically ill. If the right medical intervention is provided at the right time, many precious young lives can be saved. Strengthening a system that can provide comprehensive, rapid and high-quality paediatric critical care round the clock is therefore one of our important priorities at SVIMS.”
Dedicated Critical Care Beyond the General Paediatric Ward
Dr. Gudaru Jagadish emphasised that the clinical condition of critically ill children can deteriorate very rapidly. Continuous monitoring and immediate intervention are particularly important in children with severe respiratory distress, sepsis, septic shock, neurological emergencies and serious infections.
“A critically ill child cannot always be optimally managed in a routine paediatric ward. Such children require a dedicated environment capable of providing continuous monitoring, immediate respiratory support, emergency medications, ventilatory assistance and prompt resuscitation whenever required. The newly established PICU will play an important role in addressing this critical need,” he said.
Life-Saving Equipment with ₹52 Lakh SBI Support
The financial assistance of ₹52 lakh provided by the State Bank of India has enabled the establishment of essential infrastructure and procurement of critical-care equipment for the PICU.
The major facilities and equipment include:
- 8 ICU cots
- 4 multiparameter monitors
- 1 paediatric ventilator
- 1 High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- 1 defibrillator
- 1 ECG machine
- 1 crash cart
The multiparameter monitors will facilitate continuous monitoring of vital physiological parameters, including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and respiratory status.
The paediatric ventilator and HFNC will provide essential respiratory support to children with severe respiratory compromise. The availability of a defibrillator, ECG machine and crash cart will further strengthen the capacity of the unit to undertake immediate life-saving interventions during cardiac and other critical emergencies.
The “Golden Minutes” Can Save a Child’s Life
Highlighting the importance of timely intervention in paediatric emergencies, Dr. Gudaru Jagadish said that the first few minutes can often determine the clinical outcome of a critically ill child.
“In critical care, we are not always talking in terms of hours. In certain emergencies, minutes can determine a child’s future. Early recognition of deterioration, immediate initiation of oxygen or ventilatory support, prompt identification and treatment of shock, and timely resuscitation can help reduce preventable deaths,” he said.
He emphasised that strengthening paediatric intensive care is ultimately an investment in reducing preventable morbidity and mortality among children.
Reducing Delays and Avoidable Transfers
The establishment of the dedicated PICU will considerably strengthen the ability of SVIMS to rapidly stabilise critically ill children and provide specialised treatment within the institution.
Dr. Jagadish observed that transferring an unstable child to a distant tertiary-care facility can sometimes result in the loss of valuable time and may also expose the child to risks associated with transport.
“Wherever the required treatment can be provided within our own institution, the availability of a well-equipped PICU can help reduce unnecessary referrals and avoidable transfers. This can minimise delays in treatment while also reducing the emotional and financial burden on families,” he said.
“A PICU is More Than Beds and Equipment”
Dr. Gudaru Jagadish stressed that establishing modern infrastructure is only the first step and that the success of a PICU ultimately depends on the comprehensive clinical system surrounding it.
“A PICU is not merely a collection of ICU beds, ventilators and monitors. It is an integrated life-saving system. Trained paediatricians, skilled nursing personnel and technical staff must work in coordination with 24×7 laboratory, radiology and blood-bank services, assured availability of emergency medicines, robust infection-control practices, equipment maintenance and standard treatment protocols,” he said.
He further emphasised the need for continuous training of doctors and nursing personnel in paediatric resuscitation, ventilatory management, sepsis and shock management, and other paediatric critical-care emergencies.
Continuous Review of Clinical Outcomes
Dr. Jagadish also stressed that the functioning of the PICU should be periodically reviewed with particular emphasis on clinical outcomes, utilisation of equipment, infection-control standards and overall quality of care.
“The opening of a new unit alone cannot be the measure of success. The true measure of success is how many critically ill children receive timely treatment, how many lives we are able to save, and how consistently we are able to improve clinical outcomes,” he stated.
The institution will strive to continuously strengthen the PICU based on clinical needs, utilisation patterns and patient outcomes.
SBI’s Contribution – A Humanitarian Investment in Child Health
Expressing his sincere appreciation to the State Bank of India for extending financial assistance of ₹52 lakh, Dr. Gudaru Jagadish described the contribution as an exemplary demonstration of meaningful social responsibility.
“The ₹52 lakh support extended by the State Bank of India should not be viewed merely as a financial contribution. It is a humanitarian investment in the health, survival and future of children. This PICU is an excellent example of how institutional social responsibility can be translated directly into life-saving healthcare infrastructure,” he said.
He further added:
“The true value of this contribution cannot be measured merely in terms of ₹52 lakh or the number of pieces of equipment purchased. Its real value will be reflected in every child whose life is saved, every serious complication that is prevented, and every family that is spared the distress of searching elsewhere for critical-care facilities.”
Dr. Jagadish conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to SBI on behalf of SVIMS and, more importantly, on behalf of the children and families who will benefit from the facility.
Advanced Critical Care Must Reach Poor and Underprivileged Children
Dr. Gudaru Jagadish reiterated that financial limitations should not prevent a critically ill child from accessing timely, high-quality intensive care.
“Advanced healthcare should not remain confined only to families who can afford it. Children from poor and underprivileged families must also have access to the highest standards of life-saving critical care. As a public healthcare institution, it is our responsibility to make quality healthcare accessible to those who need it most,” he said.
Vision to Develop a Regional Paediatric Critical-Care Referral Centre
The newly established PICU will be strengthened through close clinical integration with the Departments of Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia, Radiology, Laboratory Medicine, Blood Bank and other supporting specialties.
Dr. Jagadish said that with appropriate manpower, standardised clinical protocols, continuous training and institutional support, the aim is to progressively develop the PICU into a reliable regional referral centre for critically ill children from Tirupati and the surrounding region.
“Every Child’s Life is Precious”
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Gudaru Jagadish said:
“Every child’s life is precious. Protecting the health of a child means preserving the hope of a family and safeguarding a future. In an emergency, if we can bring together time, expertise and technology under one roof and deliver the right treatment without delay, we can save many young lives. The establishment of this PICU is an important milestone in that direction.”
Dr. Jagadish once again expressed sincere gratitude to the State Bank of India for its generous financial support of ₹52 lakh towards the establishment of this much-needed paediatric critical-care facility.
He also congratulated and appreciated the doctors, nursing personnel, administrative officers, engineering and technical teams, and all others who contributed to the establishment of the PICU.
